Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The course aim is to acquaint students clearly with the basics of sound design and technology used in film and, frequently, TV.

Mode of study:

Presentation of the practice and theory experience of the instructor. Moderated discussion. Contact instruction.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Completion of „Introduction to Sound Design“ and „Sound Technology Practice.“

Recommended optional programme components:

Viewing of all current Czech films in released during the semester.

Course contents:

(Fundamentals of Sound design)

This course is a combination of presentation and information about the technical tools and technology related to design, production and presentation of the sound element of a work for film or TV. The course aim is to introduce student summarily with the basics of sound design and technology used in film and partially in TV.

1. Basic knowledge of sound 1.

2. Basic knowledge of sound 2.

3. The acoustic spectra of musical instruments and speech.

4. Techical equipment for receiving sound, receiving sound with a microphone.

5. Binaural hearing, stereophonics

6. Type of sound recording and formats.

7. Anti-noise equipment, sychronizing sound with an image.

8. Sound processing technology in film and TV, sound procedures 1.

9. Sound processing technology in film and TV, sound procedures 2.

10. Procedure in processing the sound component in film, preparation and recording.

11. Procedure in processing the sound component in film, finishing work.

12. The Sound Engineer and his work with other members of the crew and an overview of multi-channel sound systems.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

Classes

Presentation of instructor experience with theory and in practice. Discussion.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Grading and credit are awarded for:

a) attendance (80% of the total number of hours) and submission of the required work and:

b) analysis of the sound element of a particular modern Czech feature film in 3-5 pages.

Further, based on class participation and completion of the final interview.
