Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The aim of the course is - using examples from the fields of cultural history, anthropology, sociology, aesthetics and urbanism - to show cinema, literature and art as an active instruments of shaping of power, its construction, legitimization, ridiculing, escape to imaginary worlds as well as (passive) resistance. Course will be based on movie passages, literature extracts, pictures as well as on short excursions.

Course contents:

Why is art so powerful? How it can change the life of so many people? How we construct the new (imaginary) worlds and deconstruct the old ones? The course is focused on the relation of narrative and visual arts to society. The special attention will be paid to the mutual relation of aesthetics and politics.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

Workshop No 1 (11.3.2014):Nature as an Aesthetical Inspiration

What aesthetic qualities are hidden in the nature? And how can phenomenological approach help us to discover them?

Starting with the reading of phenomenological poetry, this workshop will later continue in the greenhouse of the university botanical garden. Here, we will explore the beauty of numerous tropical plants through the lenses of phenomenological approach. ...and in the end you are supposed to create your own phenomenological drawing and text/poem based on your impression of your favour plant.You have to bring your drawing and writing facilities (pencils, pens, papers, some solid pad you will write on, etc.)

Workshop No 2 (18.3.2014):Medieval Culture as a Language

What messages, symbols and stories are hidden in the medieval art? And how it differs from our perception of art today? How do we perceive art ? do we know it?

In this workshop we will visit Anežský klášter monastery, where is one of the biggest public expositions of medieval art in Europe. After exploring the language of medieval iconography, and it metaphysics we will try to compere it how it differs from our perception of art today. In the final workshop, you will try to describe, step by step, your own deep sensual perception of a chosen artwork. You have to bring your pen and paper.

Workshop No 3 (25.3.2014):Landscape as a Textbook, Landscape a StoryHow to ?read? a landscape?

What stories we can get from it without asking people or going to the archives?

In this workshop, we will explore a valley near outskirts of Prague ? a sanctuary of Czech weekend culture ? full of country houses, cottages, garden plots, scout summer camps as well as newly built city outskirts.During and after the workshop, you are supposed to write a short narrative/s based on a story of the landscape features.You will need drawing facilities, pen and paper, worm dress, walking shoes (there are muddy roads), small lunch for a picnic and umbrella.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Attendance - 100%

Instead of the final exam, you are supposed to submit your workshop results (text/short story/poem/drawing/ etc.) after each workshop (see more details).
