Course contents:

(Lecture given by Ronald Bergan)

Obviously, the title of the course is not to be taken literally. However, the decennial poll held since 1952 by the highly respected British film monthly magazine, Sight & Sound, could be considered the closest guide we have to a film canon. In a certain way, the poll, extending from silent cinema onwards, provides a snapshot of film history. Roger Ebert described it as „by far the most respected of the countless polls of great movies - the only one most serious movie people take seriously.“

The first ever poll was topped by Bicycle Thieves and the five subsequent polls (1962-2002) were won by Citizen Kane, which finally lost its number one position to Vertigo in 2012. Only La Regle du jeu (The Rules of the Game) has appeared in all seven of the magazine's top ten, though not much has changed in seven decades, with many of the same titles reappearing on the list.

Yet, many questions arise from this poll. What kind of conclusions about the state of cinema can we draw from it? Are there discernible elements that make these and other films great? Is there a common thread that runs through all of them? Why were such a small minority of films made after the 1960s named? Has cinema deteriorated in the last 50 years? Why have the same titles appeared every year since 1952? Is a canon desirable as a guide to quality? Should there be a distinction between commercial and „arthouse“ films? How important to a budding filmmaker is a wide knowledge of film history and a familiarity with the best films? I hope that all these questions and more will be answered and discussed during the two-day module.

In 2012, 846 critics, programmers, academics and distributors voted for the following:

1 Vertigo

2 Citizen Kane

3 Tokyo Story

4 Rules of the Game

5 Sunrise

6 2001: A Space Odyssey

7 The Searchers

8 Man with the Movie Camera

9 The Passion of Joan of Arc

10 Eight and a Half

In a separate poll, 358 directors voted for the following:

1 Tokyo Story

2= 2001: A Space Odyssey

2= Citizen Kane

4 Eight and a Half

5 Taxi Driver

6 Apocalypse Now

7 = The Godfather

7 = Vertigo

9 Mirror

10 Bicycle Thieves
