Course contents:

For 1st year students

This three-semester lecture on the history of world cinema offers a complex review of world cinema history for first- and second-year students. In conformity with „new film history“ the lecture attempts to acquaint students not just with the aesthetic and biographic dimensions of cinema (artistically important figures and trends, links between trends, links to other art forms, etc.) but also with the socio-cultural, economic and institutional context that shaped the cinema of a given era and that conversely was shaped by it. The course includes regular screenings of selected films.

Coordinator: Prof. PhDr. Jan Bernard, CSc. (jan.bernard@famu.cz)

Location: FAMU Screening Room, Weds 09.00 - 11.25, U1 11.30 - 13.55

Requirements for successful completion of the course:

1) Reading of required literature, that is, the books: David Bordwell; Kristin Thompson: Film History: An Introduction. McGraw-Hill, 1994 or the Czech edition „Historie Filmu“, several copies available in the FAMU library. For the test concluding each semester, it is sufficient to read all the parts of those books which cover the periods covered in lectures in the given semester.

Gerneral supplementary literature for lectures (D´Agostini, Paolo: Legendární filmy, Praha 1989; Sova, Dawn B.: Zakázané filmy, Praha 2005; Toterberg, Michael (ed): Lexikon světového filmu, Praha ? Litvínov 2005). The supplementary literature for individual lectures is largely found in the syllabuses. (The supplementary literature is not required. It only serves as help for student studies in subsequent years.)

2) Viewing compulsory films

An inseparable part of the lecture material is the viewing of 2-3 compulsory films, of which at least one will be shown at the school in the lecture. The others must be viewed by the students independent of the lecture. With the exception of some films shown during lectures, all compulsory films are available on VHS or DVD in the FAMU video library.

Be aware that the test or exam one question will focus on the verification of knowledge of the compulsory films.
