Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The aim of the lecture series and screenings is, in the three semesters, to provide a basic knowledge of the development of world cinema from its prehistory to the 1980s, particularly regarding the most important types, genres, currents, styles and figures in the entirety of cinema. This includes political, economic and artistic contexts, audience lifestyle, etc. The lectures and screenings are the foundation of knowledge necessary for a better understanding of the related specialized lectures

Mode of study:

Lecture supplemented by film samples and study projects.

Information from lecture is supplemented by study of presented literature and individual „close reading“ of recommended films.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Knowledge of the history of world cinema up to 1945, general knowledge of world literature, fine arts, photography and world history. Knowledge of English as well.

Recommended optional programme components:

Independent study of the aforementioned supplementary study or similar literature and „detailed readings“ of recommended films.

This three-semester lecture on the history of world cinema offers a complex review of world cinema history for first- and second-year students. In conformity with „new film history“ the lecture attempts to acquaint students not just with the aesthetic and biographic dimensions of cinematography (artistically important figures and trends, links between trends, links to other art forms, etc.) but also with the socio-cultural, economic and institutional context that shaped the cinema of a given era and that conversely was shaped by it. The course includes regular screenings of selected films.

Requirements for successful completion of the course:

1) Reading of the required literature, that is, books by David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson, Dějiny filmu, NAMU+NLN Praha 2007, edited edition 2011. FAMU students in daily study have the opportunity to purchase, with a discount, from a limited number at the FAMU library) For the test concluding each semester, it is sufficient to read those section of the books which cover the periods in the lectures of the given semester. General supplementary lecture literature, among others: D´Agostini, Paolo: Legendární filmy, Praha 1989; Sova, Dawn B.: Zakázané filmy, Praha 2005; Toterberg, Michael (ed): Lexikon světového filmu, Praha ? Litvínov 2005). The supplementary literature for individual lectures is largely found in the syllabuses for those classes on the CAS webpages. (Supplementary literature is not required. It serves only as to assist the students in further study.)

2) Viewing compulsory films

An inseparable part of the lecture material in each lecture is the viewing of 2 to 3 compulsory films, of which at least one will be shown at the school in the lecture. The others must be viewed by the students independently from the lectures. With exceptions, some films shown during lecture are compulsory films available on VHS or DVD at the FAMU video library.

Be aware that parts of the exam are verification of knowledge of the compulsory films and their contextual interpretation.

3) Knowledge of the lecture material

Grading:

Each semester is concluded with an oral exam in which one fundamental topic is asked about, a second supplementary question on one film. (Except for very important cases, knowledge of the precise production year is not required. It is sufficient to provide a date with +/- 5 years precision, ex: first/second half of the 1920s, turn of the 1940s to 50s, beginning of the 1960s, etc.)

Each semester is concluded with an oral exam in which one of the basic topics is tested, the second is supplementary and the third is about a film. (execept in very exceptional and significant cases knowledge of the exact year of production of a film or phenomenon will not be required: a +/- 5 year arrangement is sufficient, ex; half of the 20s, turn of the 40s to 50s, beginning of the 60s, etc.)
