Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The course aim is to acquaint students with contemporary critical thought on animation and its theory overlaps. The course is taught by Eliška Děcká.

Mode of study:

Classes (discussions on the priorly read writings) with a lecture introduction and screenings of topic examples.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Most writings will be in English. The students are expected at least a passive knowledge of the language.

What all can be animation today?: Potential and definition of contemporary animation

(discusions about writings + screening of selected short films on the topic)

2) 5. Mar.

Animation and Creator: Particular concepts of various positions of creatorship in animated film, autobiography

(discussion on writings + screenings of selected short films on the topic)

3) 2. April

Feature-length animated film: Popular culture, child audience, the animation industry

(discussion on writings + screenings of examples on the topic)

4) 19. Mar

Animation and Documentary film: Personal memories/oral histories, education, sociology

(discussion on writings + screenings of selected short films on the topic)

5) 16. April

Animation works and TV: Series, videos, theme music/jingles, commercials - contracted works

(discussion on writings + screening of selected short films on the topic)

6) 30 April

Animation and minorities: Stereotypes, committment, animation in connection with the non-profit sector

(discussion on writings + screenings of selected short films on the topic)

7) 14. May

Animation and gender: Gender stereotypes in fairy tales and other places, feminism, female heroes

Assessment methods and criteria:

Students will be required before each class to prepare at home by reading on the topic of the following class (the writings will be predominantly in English). Readings for the first class witl be available during office hours at the CAS secretary's office. For credit it is necessary to participate and write a short (min. 3 standard pages - 1 standard pg. = 1800 characters including spaces) critical analysis of a selected animated film with the literature used as covered in class.
