Learning outcomes of the course unit:

A theory excursion into the history of depicting scientific data from a media archeology perspective. The module aim is to provide a glimpse into the paradigms of depiction schematics in a historical context and its possible applications to today's manner of the perception of scientific diagrams.

Course contents:

A wide-variety of diagrams - graphs, development diagrams, data visualizations, info-graphics - pervade today's culture from expert research and technical fields to everyday live and represent one of the most important tools in orienting in contemporary society. The lecture presents the historical situaiton from the genesis of those forms and set them into the context of the history and science of visual culture.

Tomáš Dvořák is a research assistant at the Institute of Philosophy at the Czech Republic Academy of Sciences, and professional assistant at the Dept. of Media Studies at the Charle's University Dept. of Social Sciences. He works in Material Culture Research and the Historical Epistemiology of Media.

Thematic issue resarch theory is devoted to various aspects of the theory and history of media, which later resulted in an anthology of the history of new media (2010).
