Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The purpose of the screenings is for a communal audience experience in the framework of an introduction and group discussions. An analytic text is required at the end of the semester to aid in this learning process.

Mode of study:

This course consists of screenings in the large hall at the City Library. Prior to screenings is an introduction and subsequent moderated discussion. Often there is the participation of the filmmaker. At the end of the semester exam dates are announced in which the submitted texts are evaluated.

Those who register for this elective course will attend most screenings and subsequent discussions, submitting by a given deadline (CAS webpages) a written analysis focused on one of the screened films.

Written paper description:

The required text is an anlysis of one of the screened films which focuses on structural features of the work (i.e. style, narrative form, poetry of individual elements) and their relationship to the topic or plot of the film.

It is not desirable that the text is given much space to a description of events, factual data about the film or filmmakers. The analysis will be assessed by CAS memebers. Credit will be posted during the exam period. Part of credit award will be a verbal analysis and evaluation of the submitted text.

Extext of the submitted text:

5400 characters including spaces, i.e. 3 pages. Exact data may be checked in the word processing program (ex: MS Word; found in the „Soubor“ menu under „Vlastnosti“, under „Statisticke udaje.“

Text format and manner of submission:

Electronically only.

a) by email to: svestkova@famu.cz as an .rtf file with margins at 1.7cm and 1.5 line spacing. File to be named: „vaseprijmeni-nazevfilm.rtf“.

b) by 1.44 diskette, text saved in the same format as in a), at the CAS room No.429 at Lažan to Zdeňka Švestková in her hours present there (Mon-Thurs. 10-12)

Course contents:

This course is a series of heterogenic screenings and subsequent discussions with space for the participation of all study year students in all studies. Participation in screenings and discussionsis possible without registering for the class in the year's study plan. Those who register for it must fulfill the requirements necessary for receiving credit. Information about the program is posted on the board on the 1st florr of Lazansky Palace, in current events at FAMU and on the webpages of the City Library.

CHARACTER OF THE WRITING:

The required text is an analysis of one of the screened films which focuses on the structural features of a work (that is; style, narrative form, poetry of an element) and it relationship to the topic, or plot of the film.

The text should not devote space to a description of events, facts about the film or filmmaker. The analysis will be assessed by CAS members and credit will be announced in the exam period. Part of the award of credit will be a verbal analysis and assessment of the submitted text.

EXTENT OF THE SUBMITTED TEXT:

5400 characters including spaces, that is, 3 standard pages. Exact data may be given by your text editor, ex: in MS WORD it can be found in the „File“ menu under „Characteristics“, under the the title „statistical data.“

TEXT FORMAT AND MANNER OF SUBMISSION:

Always in electronic form via email to famu saved as an .rtf file, set with 1.7cm margins and 1.5 line spacing. Name the file such: „yoursurname-filmtitle.rtf“.
