Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The bass clarinet is part of many music groups. The course provides the student with all skills and knowledge needed for playing theinrument. Students are divided according to their abilities. They are introduced to technique of proper playing. Considering that the difference of student playing skills can greatly vary, individual instruction paths are chosen. The view of the student as to why they wish to play the instrument is decisive for the course method. The students are introduced to the instrument and its potential. For those who are more proficient in playing, easier etudes are used to define their playing issues and the most feasible path to correction is found.

Mode of study:

On-going participation in symphony and opera orchestra auditions.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Instrument skills at the level corresponding to the study year and student profile.

Recommended optional programme components:

Chamber literature of duets, trios and other combinations of wind, string, keyboard and percussion instruments.

Course contents:

The Bass clarinet is an instrument of many music groups. This instrument is extensively used in orchestra, solo and, today, other music genres. This course gradually provides students with all skills and knowledge needed for playing the bass clarinet. Students are divided according to their skills. They are introduced to the techniques of proper playing of the bass clarinet. Considering that the difference in students' playing of the bass clarinet can be great a individual path of instruction is selected. This individual approach and the acceptance of various skills is the path to get the less proficient quickly to a good playing level. The reason the student wishes to play the bass clarinet is definitive for the course method. Not everyone is interested in the bass clarinet solo track. Many wish to play this instrument for practical reasons. There are many advantages in auditions for orchestra chairs. Students are introduced to the instrument and its potential. For those who continue playing the bass clarinet the help is found in the easiest etudes identifying playing issues and a path to the feasible correction is found.
