Learning outcomes of the course unit:

This course provides students with an awareness of orchestral literature and practices the most important solos the orchestra musician may encounter. In all the courses, all composers and their important solos for the French horn are gradually introduced. This course works with orchestral studies, both domestic and international editions and specialized Czech orchestra parts (ČF, FOK, SOČR, ND).

Mode of study:

On-going participation of the students in symphony and opera orchestra auditions.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Instrument skills at the level corresponding to the study year and student profile.

Recommended optional programme components:

Chamber literature in wind duets and trios.

Course contents:

Students in this course acquire experience with on-stage performance. Their role in instruction alternates from student to artis and also, which is very important, they have the opportunity comment the given performance. There is a whole range of performance issues in concert performance which the course addresses. Student performance is analysed and assessed in all performance aspects by the instructor and students. In each course space is gradually given to each wind instrument and all style periods. Students create, in each course, a coherent concert program. Student perfromance is evaluated in each aspect of performance. First of all, compositions are analysed which students must play and individual performance pitfalls are shown. Students are evaluated on how they managed these issues. The students' level of playing is not neglected in technique, intonation, sound, dynamic and performance aspects. Comparisons with other prominent artists are provided on CDs of other performances of the same piece and the pros and cons of individual artistic performances. The opportunity for students to publically perform individual compositions before students is also provided. This experience is very important for concert performance.

Recommended or required reading:

Very high demands on performance. Maximum concentration on performance quality in intonation, rhythm, and agogics. Analysis of the artist personality of the student at the highest level of study at a higher institution. Dramaturgy issues of the subsequent master's graduation concert. Work with domestic and foreign editions of orchestral studies and specialized orchestra parts for Czech Republic orchestras (ČF, FOK, SOČR, ND).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

Participation of students in auditions for symphonic and opera orchestras.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Evaluation of instrument and orchestra playing, completion of the established repertoire, AKS verification, all concluded with the award of credit.
