Learning outcomes of the course unit:

This course provides the student with all practical and educational skills needed for clarinet reed production or modification. This course covers possible reed heel modifications and its influence on intonation, staccato, tone quality, dynamics, etc. The reed heel plays in important influence on the ease of play and distant tones. The heel does not seem to be an important place for reed modification. However, its influence is indisputable. A large cut in modification and the result is tangible, mainly in ease of creating a tones which are distant from each other. The differences in profiles is shown in different producers. Also clearly shown are poor modifications and the results of those modifications. Wood quality must be compared and the most appropriate modification selected. Reed modification issues are explained in the context of other parts of the reed such as the tip, center, edges, etc. This course introduces the students to these issues.

Mode of study:

Playback of students from the clarinet classes with reeds they adjusted themselves.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Reed adjustments according to style specifics, high tone sound flexibilty, extreme dynamic and double-staccato.

Recommended optional programme components:

None

Course contents:

This course provides the student with all practices and education skills required for production or modification of clarinet reeds. The course covers the possible modifications to the reed heel and their influence on intonation, staccato and tone quality, setting dynamics and the like. The heel of the reed has a decisive influence on the ease in the sounding of distant links - distant tones. The heel does not seem to be an important part in reed modification. However, this influence is indisputable. A larger removal in modification results in tangible differences, mainly in ease of tone production, which are quite far and apart. It has been shown in the differences in profiles from various producers. It is also graphically shown in poor modifications and the results of those. Wood quality must must be compared and the most appropriate modifcation selected. Issues in reed modification is explained the context of other parts of the reed such at the tip, body, sides and the like. This course introduces students to these issues.
