Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The course aim is an acquaintance with the methodological origins of dance analysis and existing analysis procedures providing the basic framework and conceptual tools for analysing the interna structure of dance and its external context. Theory knowledge is applied to dance material. This course contributes to abilities in understanding, the nature of its form and the particulars of various types of dance.

Completion of Dance Analysis 1, material is linked to the previous semester.

Course contents:

Dance interpretation: In an analysis of the context of dance and its content the relation of dance to the social-environment is traced in which it started, its historic and geographic anchoring, attitude to the prevalent artistic code and the place of dance in the artist's creation (if it exists). Another level of interpretation is the noting of the aim/function of dance in the given culture and arrangement among the basic types of dance (artistic, social, folk, religious-ceremonial). A pivotal part of interpretation is the style analysis of dance and its genre characteristics, content analysis (in the broadest sense of the word, that is, including when the content is a specific structuring of dance movement itself).

Assessing dance: The final part of the analysis process is cotained in the model by Janet Adshead assessment, in which all knowledge is used from the previous steps and the most significant character of a particular dance is investigated, which makes up its uniqueness.

An comparison of the Janet Adshead model with other approaches, differences in basic concepts: In the presentation of a analytical procedure one encounters differences in the definition of some basic concepts, how the British models is used and how it became fixed in the arts context; These differences are also explained in instruction, primarily based on the Volkovy classification of arts.

The overall analysis of selected dances: The course class content is analyses of selected dances which represent various dance cultures, historical forms and style intentions. In this phase, there is an emphasis on interpretation and assessment and a focus on the linkage of all performed analysis steps into an compact dance analysis which is written.

During the semester independent study of the assigned literature, and a preparation of an analysis at home are required. The exam is written. The overall grading is comprised of class participation, completion of class assignments (30%) and grading of the final text (70%).

Conditions for successful completion of the course: working in class, completion of course assignments and sitting the test.
