- Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The course aim is an acquaintance with the methodological origins of dance analysis and existing analysis procedures providing the basic framework and conceptual tools for analysing the interna structure of dance and its external context. Theory knowledge is applied to dance material. This course contributes to abilities in understanding, the nature of its form and the particulars of various types of dance.

Presentation of dance analysis theory concepts, analysis of dance video-recordings and notation in kinetography, discussion.

- Course contents:

Semiotics in dance analysis: The presenation covers the basic concepts and issues of semiotics using examples from other types of art. It introduces the manner of application of the stimulus of semiotics in the study of dance and especially in dance analysis (Roderyk Lange, Anca Giurchescu), demonstrating in particular examples the signs and symbols in dance (conventionalized gestures in Romance ballet, signs in classic dance forms of Southeast Asia).
The course is concluded with an analysis of a selected choreography: Classes continue work from the previous course. Teamwork is completed with an analysis of a selected choreography.
Completion of the course paper: In the course each student independently completes an analysis of one choreography/dance in which they are to demonstrate the mastery of the methodology of dance analysis, ability to find an analytical approach appropriate for the given dance particulars. The course paper is submitted in written form.

During the semester independent study of the assigned literature, and a preparation of an analysis at home are required. The exam is written. The overall grading is comprised of class participation, completion of class assignments (30%) and grading of the final text (70%).
Conditions for successful completion of the course: working in class, completion of course assignments and sitting the test.
