Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The course aim is a satifactory bearing in issues of music publishing, its structure and activities with a view to the relationships with composers, protection associations and music consumers.

Course contents:

Use of notation materials

Arrangement and use notation material in rentals, purchase and production with a view to the interests of the composer, original publisher and user.

Development of publishing activity in the Czech Republic and Europe.

Publishing - traditional forms in various variations. Beginnings and gensis of publishing in Europe. The Czech Republic 1918 - 2006 with a view to the development particulars. Privatization of Czech publishing. Foreign publishing and its current activity.

Additional subjects which cover music - primarily operations material in the Czech Republic (Dilia, ČHF).

Publishing contracts

Publishing contracts - manner and extent of providing licenses. Contract registration requirements at OSA. Co-activities of authors. Special negotiations with an unrepresented author.

Licence contracts

Licence contracts on the use of a work on rental and load according to copyright law.

Licence contracts on the use of a work publishede by press according to copyright law. Use of a work represented by 3 persons (agency, publisher), ceding a licence.

Structure and sources of publishing income

Sturcture of classical music publishing in general and in relation to investment. Sources of music publishing income and issues in individual areas - sales, rental, yield from VP and MP

Sub-publishing contracts

Sub-publishing contracts, covering, other licenses.

Overall rights

Overall rights - Stage works. Contracts on the distribution of a work and publishing contracts. Operations contracts. Issues in critical and research publishing of operas, European commission directives, Broadcast.

The publisher and the media

The publisher and public radio/tv - historical and economic background. One-time fee payments. payments for rental - the current compensation system for broadcast. Standard contracts with publishers. Changes in the EBU program. Additional use of sound recordings. Use of commercial recordings.
