Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Lecture on higher music theor issues. Basic topics: Introduction to Music Theory, Music Theory Classification and Analysis, Applied Music Theory, Research in Music Theory Classification and Analysis. The aim is to prepare Music theory professionals with perspectives for application in Musicology and Education.

Mode of study:

Contact instruction. Lectures over higher-level music theory issues. Text comparisons applying analyses of selected examples of music structure.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Prerequisites: Knowledge and skills at the level needed to be accepted to the study.

Basic topics: Introduction to Music theory, Music theory taxonomy and analysis, applied music theory, Scientific music theory taxonomy and analysis.

- Concept of music theory

- Music theory research

- Music theory working methods

- Relation of music theory to practice

- The place of music theory in the system of musicology and other related disciplines

Traditional music theory disciplines

Harmony

- Definition of harmony

- Acoustic and psychological factors of harmony thought

- Structure and basic issue in the traditional and modern study of harmony

- Chords, Chord theory

- Harmonic function

- Harmonic movement, principle of pure tonics

- Hierarchical levels of harmonic movement.
