Introduction to issues in the development of viewpoints on the importance and purpose of music from the Renaissance to the present.

Mode of study:

Lectures supplemented by topic examples.

Completion with credit of Semiotics of Music 1.

Course contents:

Arts as a system of signs. Researching the mechanisms by which man gives sense to the world which surrounds him and simultaneously that sense communicates not only through language but also with the help of artistic expression media. How music communicates, shares feelings, emotions. To what measure can extra-musical content be expressed. Semantic links in music, gesture, mimicry and overall movement media.

Continuing the material covered in the first semester, topics from the history of music aesthetics are chosen and under what influence philosopic-aesthetic opinions developed in working with music „material“ and what ideas those tendencies had on the development of music forms, genres and types. In classes students write course papers on a topic selected from the following:

Music and expression

Music and emotion

Music and imitation theory

Intention and non-intention in a music work

Music and allegory

Naturalness and conventionalism in music expression tools.
