The course aim is to reinforce the bearing of the students in harmonic and chordal elements of European music culture and expand theory knowledge regarding melodic structure of various music styles and genres.

Regular (minimum 75%) participation in lessons and active participation in discussions. Development and presentation of a paper analysing a melodic structure. Study of assigned study literature for the final exam.

- Course contents:

The history and theory of European harmony with an emphasis on 20th century music. The lecture is focused on basic harmonies and chords from the viewpoint of the theory and practice requirements for composition, conducting, music theory and music directing studies. Particular attention is given to the relationship of so called paradigms and syntagma in harmony and chord forms. The course is focused on independent student work - analysis of various forms of European chords and harmonies with an emphasis on 20th century music.
