Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Basic introduction to improvisation techniques on a given harmony. A basic good orientation in functional harmony and forma schemes. Prompt analysis of chord markings. Arranging voices on given harmony material. Basic jazz phrasing necessary for interpreting some chamber and symphonic compositions (ex. L. Bernstein).

Mode of study:

Common classes for all students in the bachelor's study program. Predominately collective exercises supplemented by individual consultations.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

No prerequisites.

Recommended optional programme components:

Concert attendances and listenings to music not only for percussion.

Course contents:

Improvisation technique on a given harmony. Differences and manners of use of linear and horizontal improvisation. Functional harmony, formal analysis, study of harmonies. Reading chord markings including regional and historical differences. Arranging voices for given harmony material. Simple forms (Blues, AABA, etc.) Sacred and ethnic scales, pentatonic, altered and othre artificial scales. The tectonics of an improvised melody. Fundamentals of re-harmonization.
