Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Detailed work on selected compositions for string quartets by Czech and world composers. Development of skills from the previous level of instrument study focusing on coordination, ensemble homogenity, style purity performance and repertoire expansion.

Mode of study:

Individual preparations under the guidance of the instructor and subsequent concert performance.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Completion of the Bachelor's Instrument study is required - playing an instrument which is part of the elective Chamber playing study.

Recommended optional programme components:

Orchestra compositions study.

According to the individual program

Recommended or required reading:

Important works of Czech and world composers from the Classic to Contemporary compositions. Required selections according to student abilities and potential and competitions taking place during study. In the 1st study-year of Masters' study: study and performance of one the crowning string quartet works of W.A. Mozart (KV 387, 421, 428, 458, 464, 466, 575, 589, 590), Study and presenta a new composition for string quartet, or collaboration with the HAMU Composition Dept. in Prague. In cooperation with the Keyboards and Wind Depts, study and presentation of some piano quintets or quintets for winds and string quartets by composers such as Mozart, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Dvořák, etc.

2nd year: Study and performance of one of the late string quartets by L. van Beethoven, one of the crowning works representing music of the 20th century (L. Janáček, B. Martinů, B. Bartok, P. Hindemith, etc) and one of A. Dvořák's string quartets (op. 34, 51, 61, 96, 105, 106).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

Exercises and individual score study.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Credit is awarded based on exercise participation, study and presentation quality of at least 2 string quartets.
