Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Theoretical and practical familiarization of students with the influence of individual national theatrical cultures on the creative development of basic methods of European and North American theatre. The emphasis is on creative application of the methods of K. S. Stanislavski, Mikhail Chekhov, Peter Brook and Jerzy Grotowski.

Mode of study:

Lectures, classes, workshops.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Passing of exams in defined subjects at individual levels of education according to the study plan. Continuity in the Stage acting, Directing, Dramaturgy and Acting studies.

Recommended optional programme components:

Monitor of the development of European and American theatres and the tension among the traditional, modern and post-modern.

Course contents:

Curriculum:

1) interpretation of Chekhov's plays in different theatrical cultures;

2) interpretation of Shakespeare plays;

3) interpretation of 20th century dramatists;

4) absurd drama and acting of psychological realism;

5) Ibsen, Strindberg, Gorky and contemporary theatre.

Syllabus:

Students are familiarized with the theoretical foundations of interpretation of key works of dramatic literature in contemporary theatre on the basis of specific traditions of concrete theatrical cultures. Through practical instruction under the leadership of foreign pedagogues, they experiment with a form of exercise that is different from what they have experienced during their studies at DAMU. This leads them to a practical and theoretical understanding of the differences between various theatrical experiences, giving them inspiration for their further creative work.

Depending on topics chosen by foreign pedagogues.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

In lecture, classes and workshops students are introduced to the most important artists and production styles of various theatre cultures.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Participation in classes and workshops at a minimum of 90%.
