Learning outcomes of the course unit:

1. Ability to read and interpret a text and create a dramaturgical/directing conception

2. Ability to analyze a dramatic situation and motivation for action of dramatic characters

3. Ability to lead and motivate actors when the director and actors play out a situation

4. Ability to create and organize dramatic space

5. Ability to perform scenic stylization and alienization

6. Ability to express the meaning of a dramatic situation in time and space through mise en scene

7. Ability to coordinate and control all elements of creative productions and their harmonizing into a unified, thematicized whole

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Mastery of basic theatre terminology. Knowledge of contemporary theatre.

Recommended optional programme components:

Continuous monitor of novelties in theatre, production, drama texts and trade literature including periodicals.

Course contents:

1. Analysis of the text and staging intent

2. The situation and creating dramatic space

3. Movement and position in space

4. Given circumstances and motivation of action

5. Relations of characters and playing out the dramatic situation

6. Creating mise en scene and barriers to action

7. Fabulation and composing the production as a whole

Syllabus:

Based on analysis of the text and the staging intent arising from it, students proceed to identifying individual situations and collectively creating dramatic space. They become familiar in practice with the possibilities for expression of mutual relations by thematicized movement and position in space. An integral component is work with given circumstances and practical verification of motivation for action. The main content is playing out and developing of the dramatic situation by the director and actors and the creation of a corresponding mise en scene. At the end of the semester, the students arrive at a whole production that is deliberately composed and thematicized.An integral component of the class is reflection on the results achieved.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

Selection, analysis and adjustment of parts of a drama text, its casting and rehearsing, as the case may be, artistic treatment. The entire process climaxes in the Summary performance which is followed by its review.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Grading is done based on the artistic results of the Summary performance. An important part is the participation of the student in class debates and creative joining in at the exam.
