Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Deepening the approach to study of history and theory of the field, for which it is important to use as a basis original source documentary materials of the most diverse kind. In 4 semesters it involves individual steps of gathering, continual developing and finding documentary material that can be combined and supplemented.

Mode of study:

discussion, research, development and analyses of source material.

Course contents:

This course engages students in research tasks in part in issues of directing, dramaturgy, acting and related professions.

In the course the students are devoted to research whose extent is currently delimited by the GAČR grant project „Acting Forms and Manners“, lead by Associate Professor Zuzana Silova, Ph.D and „Modern Staging Reconstruction“ lead by Professor Jan Dušek and co-researcher Kateřina Miholova, Ph.D.

In the case of the „Acting Forms and Manners“ attention is devoted to the development of exceptionally strong acting generations which started in Czech Theatre and Film around 1945 and applied their art in the extraordinarily difficult period of more than 50 years; acquired knowledge is linked to a gradual broadening of attention to further generations a focus on the development of modern acting in the course of the entire 20th century.

A study of the form of Czech acting incites the positing of basic historic and theory issues related to the change in position of acting in the structure of theatre and film works. Generally, the relationship of versatility of artistic expression and the period climate including changes in the audiences requirements in depiction and development of the media, changes in theatre education and its influence on the position of acting.

Syllabus:

1. Gathering representative video and audio material from students' viewing and listening (including NFA, ČR and ČT archives).

2. Developing a selected bibilography.

3. Obtaining other material including personal memoirs, written statements from interviews, contributions from meeting actors, directors and other artists of the relevant generation, graduates of theatrical schools etc.

4. Developing thematicized commentaries on the collected video and audio material, using other documentation and recordings together with selected excerpts on CD ROM.

Recommended or required reading:

Continual acquisition and development of written, image and sound documentation. This is comprised of artistic sound and image recordings along with period industry critiques and studies and the reminisces of contemporaries including interviews and surveys.
