Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Upon completion of the course students are able, through their knowledge in Print to competently outsource printing materials and watch over the process from proposal to the final product. The students will be able to assess prodution potential and make decisions regarding inappropriate or non-effective technological printing processes.

Mode of study:

The first part of the course is theory lectures. The secon is theory supplemented by examples from practice, excursions to printing shops, classes with professionals.

Course contents:

1. Typescript:

Some pitfalls of written manuscripts for development in DTP. Marking a manuscript for setting. Proofreading and correction marks. Approx. 3 hours.

2. Typography:

Typeface - typometric measurement systems. Development of Latin letters and their categorization. Fond design. Typeset, Typeface, etc. Possible use in setting.

Graphic printing matter adjustment - paper and its formats. Other materials in printing. Print design. page layout, mock-up. Possible graphic paragraph adjustments, Print surface composition. Publication accompanying images. Reproduction artwork. Color modes. Print registers. Possible development in DTP. Ethical and legal impacts of using images.

3. DTP:

Hardware and software devices - characteristics. Consitency in working procedures (writer - graphic designer - printer) Pre-print preparations. Postscript. Compression and transfer of files.

4. Printing development:

The history of printing from Guttenberg... Modern printing techniques - flexography, intaglio, offset, serigraphs, digital printing, other reproduction techniques. Final production. Binding. Printed matter surface corrections.

5. Practical examples:

Visits to DTP operations, Printers, Promotional materials equipment fairs, etc....

Assessment methods and criteria:

70% attendance is required to be permitted to sit the exam.

Students are tested on Print theory and its application in printed promotional materials.
