Course contents:

The aim of the course is an analysis of the dramas of Jan Grossman - Hašek, Jarry, Kafka. Topical, motiv, stylistic, compositional, etc. Analyses enabling a tracing of Grossman's manner of interpretation. An emphasis is on the text and as well the support in Grossman's theory writings enabling avoidance of the apriori division of artists into actors and writers. Our endeavor will be a description and assessment of adaptive gestures in the context of Grossman's basic concepts - appeal, abbreviation, crisis, hyperbole and also realism, existentialism, marxism, etc.

Topics:

1. Švejk (Státní divadlo Brno, premiéra 30. a 31. 10. 1962; režie Evžen Sokolovský)

2. Král Ubu Divadlo Na zábradlí, premiéra 16. 5. 1964; režie Jan Grossman)

3. Proces (Divadlo Na zábradlí, premiéra 27. 5. 1966; režie Jan Grossman)

Literary analyses will tend towards an acquaintance with Kafka, Jarry, and Hašek literature. History research is focused on the to date dramatizations (particularly if Grossman was able to know about it). The work will be based on foundations in the text, a summary of essayist starting points should take into account all partial analyses. On-going assignments will be completed in written form and presented in a report. There will be a group discussion of the final essay.
