Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The goal of the seminar is both to continue with discussion of theoretical problems of translating especially in relation to current production practice and to create a translation of a chosen dramatic text including suggestions for dramatic adaptations (taking into consideration a possible production).

Mode of study:

Indepedent work on a translation. Investigating stylistic variations. Resolving translating issues (cultural clashes between the original and target). Resolving dramaturgy issues.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Minimal requirement is a pre-college knowledge of a foreign language (English, German, French, Russian)

Recommended optional programme components:

No elective requirements.

Course contents:

Work in the seminar is planned individually according to students' language abilities. They choose the originals they intend to work on translating, and while translating they also do a dramaturgical analysis (including a dramaturgical critique) and offer departure points for a possible staged interpretation.

Recommended or required reading:

Texts for translation are selected based on students' language skill (see the curriculum).

Classes based on individual consultations.

Assessment methods and criteria:

- participation at the seminar according to an individual schedule

- continuous work on a translation and regular individual consultation;

- report on the work and its author;

- finished translation of a selected foreign language original.
