Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The course aim is along with introducing the works of the afore-named theorists (see syllabus), discussion skills and investigating societal and historical contexts.

Mode of study:

Presentation of a selected writer and his selected work supplemented with readings, discussions and analyses.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

No requirements.

Recommended optional programme components:

Screenings of selected films based on the current discussion topics.

Course contents:

After an informative view into the history of aethetics, the course focuses on film analysis related to a view of its critical potential, form and content in the second half of the 20th century. The course is particularly interested in: James Monaco, Marshall McLuhan, Gene Youngblood, Vivian Sobchack, Jan Mukařovský, Antonín Syschra, Umberto Eco, Siegfried Kracauer, Christian Metz, etc. Upon agreement the student may select one for study which will be subject to a detailed extensive analysis.
