Execution of the film exercise Work Procedures teaches student the following skills:
1. Create and short narrative with a point and consideration of unity of time and location.
2. To shoot this narrative such that the shots are directly linked (which excludes the use of parallel assembly, time and space jumps and for example, jump-cut)
3. Draw it out on a storyboard
4. To prepare shooting + to shoot it on a Bolex 16mm camera
5. To edit and complete a simple sound design with the soundman.
The purpose of the exercise lies, primarily, in the experience of shooting a narrative as a feature film (change of angle, shutter, width of shot and perspective), with which the documentarist otherwise wouldn't encounter.
- Mode of study:
-
Completion of exercises.
Subject matter and subsequent storyboard consultations
Rough material analysis
Editing consulting
Film presentation
The above takes place in the 1st year workshop. All discussions are in groups with students mutually advising each other.
- Prerequisites and co-requisites:
-
Good knowledge of the Bolex camera and be able to manage basic exponometry (working with a spotmeter).
- Recommended optional programme components:
-
Students may select if they wish to process the material on an editing table or in a non-linear facility, such as Avid. In the first option, the student must master the editing table technology.

Assignment of the film exercise WORK PROCEDURE
Shoot any staged event in 12-15 shots such that they seamlessly are linked (unity of time and place). Narrate with film.
Some recommendations for WORK PROCEDURE
The purpose and aim of Work Procedure is primarily to learn how to shoot, that is, to meaningfully divede a short event into 12 to 15 shots.
Stage the event, only calmly can you achieve the intended shooting (therefore a slaughter, fishing or the like is not recommended - documentary/real events cannot be stopped and not shot can be repeated. In addition, you have no chance to control the continuity of the shot which you much film with overlaps). Count on the 12-15 shots of the staged events taking 1-2 days (dependent on the subject narrative)!
Maintaining time and place unity means that the event is continual and all shot are directly linked to one another. Do not consider any parallel or rapid editing (this can link anything with anything).
Do not choose some tiny even - that is baking strudl, or changing a clock battery or braiding hair - these subjects do not allow a sufficient register of angles and breadth of shots which mean that you will learn nothing about shooting and the entire time you will delve needlessly into micro-details (complex and exponometrically).
Work Procedure (still) is shot on a 16mm B/W inversion Bolex camera (spring driven, so the longest shot can be 25 seconds). Editing will be on an editing table. All shots will be drawn = you will make a precise storyboard including the floorplan of complex shots. If you are not able to imagine the shots at the beginning, you can then use the photo-storyboard.
