Course contents:

The objective of the subject is to instruct the students about the functioning of a film laboratory, its integration in the cinematographic film production process, the production processes in film laboratories, and with equipment used to process film material and make film copies and other film laboratory products.

The emphasis is on mastering the principles and theoretical context, whereas the description of specific equipment and organizational implications is only presented on a model basis, usually in relation to the practice in one of the domestic laboratories, given the great degree of diversity of the subject.

The subject is focused predominantly on standard cinematography and work with film on photochemical principles, but it also covers topics associated with other media where related to the activities of film laboratories.

Extensive attention is paid to the contact between film labs and directors of photography.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

1.A film laboratory ? the initial introduction

Definition of a film lab, its mission, its role in the process of cinematographic film production. Pre-production stage, shoots, and completion work. Ancillary activities in film labs.

Film stock, definition, structure; a brief history of the production and use of film stock; film base, emulsion side, principles of functioning and processing of film stock

Expected knowledge: A basic knowledge of the cinematographic film production process and its technological foundation

2.Film strip (1)

Film strip sizes and formats, categorization of professional cinematographic materials, film marking on labels and on strip, packaging and storage of both raw and processed film strips. Rules for handling films

Expected knowledge: Basics of photography on the photochemical principle, basics of cinematography, the subject matter of the previous lecture

3.Film copy production process (1)

Work with the 35 mm format, original and duplicate negative, film printing, duplication processes, reasons for duplication, principles of correct duplication, film stock used for film duplication

4.Film copy production process (2)

Work with the 35 mm format, original and duplicate negative, film print, duplication processes, reasons for duplication, principles of correct duplication, materials used for film duplication

Work with other formats, format transfers, reduction processes, blow up, aspect ratios of the 16 mm format, practical use of various film formats

5.Work procedures in film laboratories(1)

Pre-production stage, dailies, grading (timing) of dailies, film cleaning, alternative methods of printing (transferring) dailies, telecine transfer dailies

6.Work flow in film laboratories(2)

Negativ cutting, negative registration, work flow in negativ cutting, film and digital workprint, work flow in film and digital editing, application and processing of time codes and key codes, rules for splicing film.

7.Work procedures in film laboratories(3)

Production of zero print, granding (timing) answer print, master print, protection of the original negative, laboratory special effect, approval processes, release printing, film archiving

Bench rewinders (rewind table), negative cutting benches, film cleaners, film splicers and film plane, processing machine, a brief history, processing machine printers, printers types of film, their operation, exposure automation in film printers, printing step, their system and structure, colour analyzer

9.Machines ? film formats

A brief history of the development of film formats from the dawn of cinematography to date. Silent film format, Academy ratio format, 16 mm format, amateur formats, Cinerama, VistaVision, Cinemascope. Extended formats; Techniscope, Super 16, 70 mm film, super large projection, IMAX, 3D projection

10.A comparison of analogue and digital technology in post production

Development of film processing workflow from analogue to digital DI.
