Lecture content
An overview of the most important principles which are used for image data reduction wil be presented in the „Image and Video Compression“ module. In the first part the students are introduced to the necessary concepts and fundamental division of compression source codes. Further wil be demonstrated, based on no-loss compression techniques, the use of redundance in the image signal. In a part devoted to loss compression techniques, an overview of the characteristics of discreet cosine, wavelette transformation, fractal approach, vector quantization and other new approaches with a view to their use in modern image forms will be presented. A particular emphasis will be placed on a comparison of post-reduction artefacts arising from the aforementioned techniques.
Curriculum:
1) Image characteristics, the image as the bearer of information
2) Compression method characteristics
3) Non-loss compression methods
a) Prediction methods
b) lexicographic methods
c) Huffman and arithmetic coding
4) Loss compression methods
5) Discreet cosine transformation
6) Wavelette transformation
7) Fractal coding
8) Vector quantization
9) Methods based on the image model and probability methods
10) New trends in the field of image compression
11) Comparison of compression methods
