Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Verifying the abilities of the students, in the studio, to create a basic evening lighting atmosphere and the correspoding lighting construction.

Course contents:

The approach of night is presented in darkening a room in which light from the street enters. The atmosphere is abruptly interrupted by the entrance of a stranger, a character which with uncertainty moves about the room. The stranger uses a pocket flashlight to become familiar with the interior furnishings. In the expression of the stranger it is easy to see concentration and curiosity. The stranger moves about the space. Suddenly the stranger is surprised by a light which lights the way for a girl entering the hallway. The stranger quickly hides. The girl lays down her topcoat and is anxious. She suspects that she is not alone. She enters the room and turns on the ceiling light. She looks around but doesn't see anything amiss. She returns to the hall and turns out the hall light, takes her handbag from the nightstand and removes her make-up. Her activity is watched by the stranger. Completing the make-up removal the girl turns on the table-lamp next to the bed and turns off the ceiling light. She lays down her clothes out. The stranger's attention level is increased. The girl puts on a nightshirt and lies down. The stranger slowly crawls towards the girl and turns out the table lamp. The girl startles and turns toward the source of the noise and quickly, in fear, runs and curls up in a corner of a couch. She sees the stranger in silhouette in front of the window coming toward her. In the next moment the stranger turns on the flashlight and shines it in the helpless and terrified face. The stranger continues coming closer. The girl's fear renders her helpless. His other hand holds a knife with a large blade reflecting the light. The girl, powerless, falls unconscious. There are violent knife and stabbing movements. The knife has missed the victim and on the blade is written „All purpose anti-corrosive knife - Non-rusting.“

The idea of the exercise:

This exercise is intended for the creative management of a lighting atmosphere and it's changes in relations to directing and contextual treatments.

1) In the film studio with the usual lighting equipment and a 35mm camera
