Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The purpose of the lectures is to investigate manners and paths which can lead the producer to achieving goals.

Active discussions with students about individual issues

1) Name 3 films, of high quality in your opinion, which achieved above average commercial success.

Name 3 films, of high quality in your opinion, which did not achieve higher than average success, or even lower than average commercial success.

Name 3 films, of low quality in your opinion, which achieved above average commercial success.

In each of the 9 films write reasons for your opinion in two or three sentences why the film belongs to one of the two categories.

2) Present your PERSONAL topic which interests you and version you are investigating. The topic, which according to your ideas could be the topic of some of your future projects. Briefly, justify your selections and propose possible applications.

Present GENERAL topics which in your opinion are able to capture the interest of a large number of viewers. A topic whose attractive development may bring profit to a producer. Briefly justify your selection.

3. Present a theatre piece or literary text which in your opinion is appropriate for film (television) development.

Explain why this text is appropriate for film (television) development. Why the text may attract what kind and how many viewers.

Propose a genre and format development.

(This work is cca. 1 to 2 pages).

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

AVD creation and production technology. Fundamentals of distribution. Basics of marketing.

Recommended optional programme components:

Course contents:

Production dramaturgy - considerations of future films from the producer's perspective

Topic selection, material selection, viability of the selected material, orientation in the AV market, market saturation and limits, societal demands, potential finanicing.

Genres and formats

Text reading, working with a screenwriter, dramaturgy from the producer's perpective, theoretical adjustment potential.

Some further decisions which may fundamentally effect the result.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Conditions receipt of credit are:

minimum of 70% of attendance at lectures

written completion of all three course tasks (see „Planned Related Activities“) and their public presenation.

At the final interview with the instructor it is necessary to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the books Aristoteles „Poetica“; D.V. Swain: Film Screenwriting.
