About Global Family
The Alexia Foundation and Syracuse University's Newhouse School have invited universities around the world to participate in a project to photograph family life during the second half of 2014 - 2015 marks the 60th anniversary of The Family of Man.
The goal is for each university's photography program to assign at least one class to produce a project about family. Each class can determine its own focus and approach to the subject. Both still and motion projects are encouraged as well as art, documentary and journalistic approaches. This project is not a competition but rather a cooperative project aimed at connecting university photography programs throughout the world, to reflect on a significant aspect of life on the planet.
We'll utilize social media, online gatherings, publishing and gallery presentations to present the work to as broad an audience as possible.
Photoshelter has signed on as a project partner and will be the central platform for gathering images. Photo District News and ASMP are also an active partners in the project.
Mike Davis, Newhouse Alexia Tsairis Chair For Documentary Photography, is leading the project with Newhouse Graduate Student Andrea Wise. Davis runs the Alexia Foundation Grants and teaches at Newhouse after an illustrious career as an independent picture editor and with National Geographic Magazine,
the White House and several of America's leading newspapers.
