Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Students are acquainted with the current documentary approaches in graphic arts, theory writings, and the works of artists who use documentary strategies. The course expands abilities to interpret theory writings, discussion a given topic and creating opinions.

Mode of study:

Readings of selected theory writings and their interpretation, reports, group discussions on presented topics.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

A basic bearing in the history of art in the second half of the 20th century, contemporary art and photography theory, ability to read english texts.

Course contents:

The question „What is Documentarianism?“ has already destroyed an entire generation of theoreticians. (Hito Steyerl). The course aim is not to definitively answer that question but to investigate various possible answers and their sources and to discuss them. As a group we will consider the potential of documentary photography based on readings of theory topics and reports on selected artists who have defined the borders with their work.
