Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Basic introduction to photography.

Mode of study:

Students will be divided into four groups. The practical will take place at UVS Beroun in to studios, three darkrooms and exterior exercises at selected locations in the city.

The schedule with the division of work for the individual workplaces will be available at the location prior to the beginning of instruction.

Topics and Instructors:

1. Photography in the studio (still life) - working with lights and large format equipment with a digital backdrop (Mgr. M. Stecker)

Studio A - introduction to the technology of the studio, large format equipment, its potential and use, photographing objects, still life, table top - resulting work to be completed using digital technology.

2. Photography in the studio (portrait, figure) - working with a model and medium format camera (Doc. R. Prekop)

Studio B - portrait, figure, group portrait, manners of lighting, working with flash - resulting work completed on B/W negative 6x6cm, B/W enlargement

3. Photography on location (documentary photography) - Doc. J. Barta)

Working with a cinema camera, photojournalism and documentary photography, man, city, landscape, approach to topics, image composition, samples of digital camera work - resulting work completed with one's own camera on assigned color negative cinematic film, color enlargement 10x15cm developed in the minilab

4. Lab processing (work in the darkroom) - (Mgr. M. Stecker)

Developing film, B/W negative enlarging equipment

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Credit is awarded by the practical leader upon completion of the following conditions:

Active participation in executing the practical

Completing the assignment and its assessment by an appropriate instructor.

Course contents:

Instructional guidance: Doc. Jaroslav Bárta, Mgr. Martin Stecker, Doc. R. Prekop and Photography Dept. students as assistants in the darkroom.

Student obligations in the practical"

Students must have their own analog film camera.

Students pack their belongings for the stay. Accommodations are reserved in 2-bed and 4 bed rooms. A kitchenette is available.

Extent: 3 days.

Place and time + course:

Instruction and training center: Barandova 30, Beroun (Zavadilka)

Thursday (9:00) - Saturday (14:00)

Thursday and Friday accommodations at the UVS Beroun hostel.

Students travel to the location individually according to the plan given in the addendum. Travel is possible by bus from the Radlická metro station in the direction of Beroun. Departure times will be available at the Photography Dept. The travel from the bus station to UVS Beroun takes approx. 20 min.

Students will be divided into 4 groups. The practical takes place at UVS Beroun in two studios, three darkrooms and an exterior exercise in selected areas in the city. The schedule for division of work for individual workplaces will be available at the location before the beginning of instruction.

Topics and lead instructors:

1. Studio photography (still life) - working with lighting and large format equipment with a digital background and chip scanner (Mgr. Martin Stecker)

Studio A - introduction to studio technology, large-format equipment, its potential and use, photography of objects, still life, table top - resulting work using digital technology.

2. Studio photography (portrait, figure) - working with a model and medium format camera (Doc. R. Prekop, Mgr. M. Stecker)

Studio B - Portrait, figure, group portrait, manners of lighting, working with flash - resulting work using a digital background Sinarback H54 with a medium format camera. The group portrait using a classical camera Mamiya RB 67 will serve as material for subsequent developing in the darkroom.

3. Open air photography (documentary) - (Doc. J. Bárta)

Working with a film camera, report and documentary photography, man, city, countryside, approaches to the topics, image composition, examples of working with a digital device - resulting work using one's own camera on assigned color negative film, color enlargement 10x15cm developed in the minilab.

4. Laboratory development (work in the darkroom) - (Mgr. M. Stecker)

Developing film, making enlargements from B/W negatives.

5. Presentation of results: A selection of completed works will be publically presented in the Jiří Jeníček Exhibition Hall at the Prague Gate in Beroun. The opening at the end of the second round on Friday at 17:00.

Grading; Credit is awarded by the lead practicioner upon fulfillment of the following conditions: Participation in the practical. Completion of the assignments and their assessment by the instructor.
