Lucerne animation students work together with music students from University of Zürich

writing the film music for the short idents for Cartoon Network. It is a special experience to

tell your ideas for acoustic part of a film being a mostly visual person. And it´s a good way

of learning this communication as a student by just having to do it. In the end when

everything went well there is a short ident for Cartoon Network and another film on the

students portfolio.

Course contents:

Since 2011 there is a Cooperation between the BA Animation Department of University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Lucerne and the TV Channel Cartoon Network. Students of second year BA animation are learning to make concepts, direct and produce short animated spots for a client with a mostly young target group. The briefing of Cartoon Network is giving them topics like „sports“, „Halloween“ or „superheroes“. The aim is to create a short seventeen second ident which is compatible with the CI of the TV channel on the one hand and which brings out the students own

film language on the other hand. The students have one semester to work through all the production steps.

As always in animation business the most difficult part is to find a good - a really good - idea. It can be a funny short with as many gags as possible to be told within seventeen seconds. It also can be a poetic or experimental way to tell a very short animated story. The students get feedbacks from Cartoon Network creatives after they have fixed their ideas in storyboards and later on when they have put up the animatics.

To direct these Cartoon Network spots the Lucerne animation students can do classical 2D drawn animation as well as 3D CGI or analog puppet animation They choose their own technique after having done several short works in the first year. They design the characters and have to animate them well timed.
