Learning outcomes of the course unit:

„In the module Sylvain Chomet's film “The Old Lady and the Pigeons" will be shown and the remaining time will be devoted to discussion with this excellent representative of contemporary French animation. The module will be moderated by a FAMU Animation Dept. instructor.

Course contents:

A 50 year-old native of Maisons-Laffitte, near Paris who studied art starting in high school, and then finished graphic school in Angouleme. A year after graduation, in 1987 moved to London where he gained experience as an assistant in the animation studio of Richard Purdum. After this, he shot advertisements, ex: for Renault or Swissair and created comics. Upon return to France he founded a graphics studion in Montpellier, but soon left France again and went to Quebec. In Canada, in 1997 he made his first animated film. The Old Lady and the Pigeons. Excited by successes and awards at the renowned film festival in Annecy, a BAFTA award and Oscar nomination he began work on his feature-length animated film debut. „The Triplets of Belleville,“ 2003, was celebrated and brought Chomet two more Oscar nominations, for best animated film and best song. He competed for another Oscar seven years later with „The Illusionist“ which came from the unfinished script if the legendary French comedian Jacquese Tati from 1956. Between „The Triplets“ and „The Illusionist,“ attempted at feature film in one of the (Eiffel) segments of the a narrative film of „Paris, I love you!“
