Course contents:

The course aim is to provide FAMU students with and introduction to issues of long-term conservation of data focusing on audio-visual content. Previous experience with archiving and management of content isn't necessary. Students will be acquainted with theory and practical procedures applicable to their own material. In the module, also, the planned FAMU study program focusing on management and archiving. Part of the course will be an overview of issues linked to storage and long-term archiving, presentation of theory of concepts and standard including referrence models OAIS, a description of treatments used in the audio-visual industry and in archiving institutions and an introduction to issues of metadata their typs and standards. Also discussed will be basic procedures and devices for the normal management and archiving of video in digital format.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

Four lecture block, each 90 min, Presentations of the instructor and guests linked to discussions. Handling practice problems and blocks of questions / answers.

Independent work on the topic of conserving one's works/ one's own video archive (extent: 2 A4 pages, instructor individual grading)

Bohuš Získal is an instructor, specialist in professional audio-visual technology and long-term archiving content with long-term experience in the commercial and public sectors. He studied cybernetics at ČVUT FEL and received a doctorate (Ph.D.) in Information Science at FFUK. He has gained experience in video and film as a graphic artist and supervisor of special effects during his eight year stay at Czech Television and at Universal Production Partners. After this he was devoted to international projects in arts and new technology and subsequent designing technology units for production and television companies at Visual Connection/Unity and Provys. His work for the non-profit sector includes consolidation databases and accessing archives of contemporary classical music (Musicbase for the Music Information center). Bohuš Získal has for a long time been published in professional periodicals, lectured in a number of Prague universities and currently leads the HND computing study at Prague College.
