Field of study characterization

The Master?s programme is conceived as an artistic programme intended primarily for graduates of the Bachelor?s programme in Pantomime at HAMU, and also for graduates of programmes at DAMU or for other candidates at a comparable academic level, e.g. graduates of other similar university-level arts schools in the Czech Republic or abroad (e.g. the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno (JAMU) ? Studio of Clownery, Stage and Film Creation, etc.).

In the Master?s programme, the student focuses on a specialisation in the genre which he or she will pursue practically and theoretically according to his or her own choice and dispositions. The goal is to expand theoretical knowledge in the area of mime theatre, authorial creation, dramaturgy and directing, aesthetics, the psychology of gesture and mime, and crossover into the genre of film.

In the first year, the core subject is Physical Theatre; in the second year, theory, dramaturgy and directing mime theatre. The study plan aims to deepen professional skills acquired during the Bachelor?s programme with an accent on developing the student?s professional focus in the area of mime theatre with an emphasis on authorship and directing.

Key learning outcomes:

In the Master´s programme, students who have already mastered the fundamentals of technical and artistic work with the body, know how to work with the fundamentals of authorial theatre and possess theoretical knowledge at the required level devote themselves to further expanding their theoretical knowledge and to serious practical projects in the area of mime theatre and modern circus, but in particular to physical theatre and to realising their own authorial project - the graduate work. Space is also left for projects which interconnect mime theatre with film, and enable students to experiment in the areas of dramaturgy and directing. Emphasis is placed on a graduate´s own projects in accordance with his or her future practice.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples:

Graduates of the Master?s programme in Pantomime at HAMU are artistic personalities capable of independent creative work in mime theatre and modern circus as performers, dramaturges and directors. They must know how to connect classical and modern technical approaches and means of mime theatre with an aesthetic aspect and individual creativity in interpreting and directing mime theatre, as well as in creating authorial projects. Furthermore, they must have a high level of theoretical knowledge in mime theatre and modern circus. Graduates can apply their skills as professional performers (mimes or actors), dramaturges and directors in the area of mime theatre and modern circus with crossover into other branches of theatre, and as expert assistants in movement projects, choreography and scriptwriting in theatre and film. In addition, they can work as pedagogues at arts schools at the primary, secondary and university levels, as well as in authorial creation with a specialisation in mime theatre.

Examination regulations, assessment and grading:

Fulfilment of the study plan is verified with the help of an electronic system, into which are also entered the final assessments necessary for completing individual subjects. The study of a subject then culminates with the awarding of a credit or by sitting for an examination.

Examinations may be practical, oral, written, or involve a combination of these methods, and are graded on the scale „A, B, C, D, E, F“. The student is entitled to a second and third attempt to pass an examination. In exceptional cases, a fourth attempt may be requested and must be approved by the Dean of the faculty. A fourth attempt to pass an examination takes place before an examination committee. It is not permitted to repeat an examination for the main subjects, which are also by commission.

Graduation requirements:

The student fulfils the requirements set by the study plan.

The student passes the final state examination in the core subjects announced by the Dean. These subjects are: Chapters in the History of Pantomime (Bachelor?s), and Psychology of Mime, and Gesture and Dramaturgy in Authorial Theatre (Master?s).
