Learning outcomes of the course unit:

This course provides students with all practical and teaching skills required for producing or modifying clarinet reeds. This course covers the structure of reeds and wood quality from various brands of reeds. The course also demonstrates potential differences in modification by other producers. Each producer uses slightly different wood and therefore there are differences in the sounds by the reeds. The course explains the structure of wood in relation to tone quality. The wood and its structure. The wood and its structure is an important factor for sound and tone quality. Each woold has its own specific structure which arises in the wood growth. Some woods are denser shots and others less. Some are more mature or drier than others. This all plays an important role for the durability of the reed, its playing and related modifications. Ease of clarinet play depends in large part on the wood parameters the reed has. Each producer has wood characteristic for its brand and it is necessary to consider this when modifying. This complicates the modification of reeds in that there must be and individual approach to each brand and type. Poorly selected modifications are demonstrated. The issues are demonstrated in the entire spectrum o reed modification. The is the course content.

Mode of study:

Playback of students from the clarinet classes with reeds they adjusted themselves.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Reed adjustments according to style specifics, high tone sound flexibilty, extreme dynamic and double-staccato.

Course contents:

All producers use various woods and therefore differences in reed sounds appear. The course explains the structure of wood in relation to tone quality. Wood and its structure is the most important factor for sound and tone quality. Each wood has its own specific structure which arises in the growth of timber. Some wood is a denser annual and others thinner. Some are more mature or better dried than others. This all plays a significant role for the durability of the reed, its playing and related modifications. Ease of play on the clarinet depends, in great measure, on wood parameters which the reed has. Each producer has a wood characteristic for its brand and it is necessary in modifications to account for these. The approach to reed modification is complicated by each different brand and type. Poorly selected modifications are demonstrated. The entire spectrum of reed modification issues is demonstrated. This is the course content.
