Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Preparing students with the ability to analyse construction materials (wood), know various adjustment technologies, and preservation and storage of final products (reeds, double-reeds).

Mode of study:

Presentation of experience in double-reed production and adjustment.

Reeds, Gougers, Pre-gougers

Course contents:

This course provides students with practical and methodolgy-instruction skills which are required for oboe double-reed production or adjustment. Wood structure in relationship to tone quality is explained. The constrution of double-reeds of various strengths, sounds, life-spans and use in all situations and other attributes for oboe playing.

1) Introduction to gouging equipment.

2) Preparation of wood and other materials.

3) Overview of various procedures with consideration of the individual needs of the students.

4) Comparison of results in various working processes.

5) Selection of procedure in double-reed production considering the differing needs of the individual.

6) Continual monitoring and checking of production procedures, and eventual adjustments or changes.

Presentation of experience in double-reed production and adjustmen.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Double-reed production corresponds to the playing disposition of each oboe player and reflects their intepretation ideas of sound, color, dynamics and expression.
