Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Overview of instruction procedures in the context of dance education. The origin and development of the canon of classical dance technique and ballet. Ability in the comprehensible and logical presentation of classic dance methodology, instruction organization and working with music accompaniment.

Mode of study:

This course introduces the theory and practice of a classical dance instructor. It covers issues in approach to pupils, instruction, formulating dance instruction principles, organization of the instruction process and theory of classical dance technique. Part of the study is and analysis of instruction approaches.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Broad knowledge of dance instruction style, form and content developing experience and diverse theory knowledge in the dance arts. Demonstration of abilities and knowledge leading to the best peformance of a future dance in the spirit of a broad knowledge of dance virtuosity.

Course contents:

a) The creation of schools of classic dance in the European tradition in the context of the overlap of international styles.

b) movement trends of prominent persons - details and differences of styles and historical significance. This rich knowledge increases the demands on education and also enables the development of dancer skills and their performance. At the same time in influences the inspiration of choreographers and the entire development of dance.

c) material mapping the most significant instructors and their instruction systems, ex: Agrippina Vaganova, Nikolaj Tarasov, Enrico Cecchetti, Auguste Bournonville, George Balanchine, etc. Additionallystudents are introduced to the rules in working with a coach, music literature, music phrasing, importance of prepration and close, music improvisation, tempo, dynamics, etc. with consideration of the special aims of the music accompaniment in ballet exercise.

Assessment methods and criteria:

development of the semester paper

During the semester independent readings, active participation in class discussion which are a condition for participation in the exam are required. The exam is both written and oral. The overal assessment is comprised of 60% for class activity, 20% for the written part of the exam and 20% for the oral.
