Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Systematic reflection on basic problems and questions connected with the origins and development of the art of drama and analysis of specific examples from contemporary stage practice.

Mode of study:

Classes, independent preparations for a course paper on a defined topic. Debates on the assigned literature and theatre performances.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Term paper developing an assigned topic with the aid of archival materials, expert reviews and continually published literature.

Course contents:

1. Origins and basis of European drama

2. The comic and literary lines of development of European drama

3. Naturalness and stylization in the development of European drama

4. Ways of creating stage characters in European drama

5. Natural (natural) language and the language of drama

6. The most important traditions of Czech drama theatre

7. Basic developmental tendencies of European drama and their roots

8. When (by what) modern drama began and (if at all) ended

Recommended or required reading:

Literature is assigned on the basis of specific tasks.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Class participation. Completion of a course paper and discussions about it.
