Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Students, upon completion of the course, should be able to percieve the difference between film and theatre poetics and the expression tools of both of those arts. They should be acquainted with the current narrative theories and based on these be able to compare the original film (script) with its transformation in a theatre script and staging on which it was based. As a result the student should also be able to identify the part and input of individual creative subjects into the resulting artistic work.

Mode of study:

Classes combined with lectures and moderated discussions.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Knowledge of Czech drama and theatre at the Bachelor's level, Basic familiarity with important figures in Czech and world cinematorgraphy.

Course contents:

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with issues inthe relationship of theatre and film in their two forms. The first semester will be devoted to the more traditional form of that relationship, that is film based on drama. The second semester will cover today's very progressive form of theatre adaptations of film sources. Upon agreement several Czech dramas will be selected and their film adaptations screened. Students may be prompted to attend theatre performances based on films. In the second part of the semester there will be discussions over the manners of how adapters, scriptwriters and directors completed the translation of a piece from one type to another. Issues in the differences in literature, theatre and film will be covered as well as various adaptation strategies and the influence of cinematography on the reader and theatre-makers.
