Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Students will be able to distinguish between the main ethical concepts. They will be able to take a standpoint and relate it for their needs to the topic of theatre - either in the form of the relationship to a particular theatre play or in general to the function of theatre in questions of ethics and vice versa.

Mode of study:

Classes combined with lectures, moderated discussions, one's own independent work.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Knowledge of the history of drama and theatre at the bachelor's level, interest in philosophy.

Course contents:

The course offers a cross-section of various ethical concepts, value systems and manners of behaviour. It also focuses on the relationship of ethics to theatre in the sense of the effect of theatre on the quality of human life and society. We will query what the various concepts mean in living well, virtuously or happily. Such the aim is to achieve what role takes in this. Ethics depends on the concept of the „person“, therefore our research will cover what man does to man in different ideas. Based on very clear and interactive discussion, we will investigate what would inspire the course participants themselves. Is theatre an illustration of morals, a tool for their establishment? Or is and ethics stand-point constructed and established? Or is it the place of their investigation and analysis? In what plays is it possible to study those questions? Because ethics are not possible to prove, will the results, which we come to, be convincing or will the participants find their own experience and co-create them?
