Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Students gain a bearing the issues in the rise and function of media along with a view of theatre as a medium of it own. Also the cultural function of electronic media for public service and in this direction the realtion of theatre and media.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Course registration requirement is that the student in the bachelor study completed the courses Theatre Terminology, HIstory of Czech Theatre and Theatre in a Cultural Context I and II.

Course contents:

Topics:

Communication and media. Publishing and print media. Film, radio, television. New Media.

Agora and Circus, public and private space, The Enlightenment and rise of „public media agoras“, technology and media content.

The Czech dual-broadcast system, Traditional Czech Radio and television as cultural and informational institution.

Reality and media, advertisement, propaganda, persuasion, similarity, medio-cracy.

Entertainment, news, educational and cultural function of the media, reproductive and productive functions of public service media.

Theatre radio and television.

Theatre and internet.

Drama arts and public service media, show-business and creation, mass culture and counter-culture.
