Learning outcomes of the course unit:

The aim is an introduction to the basic theory and practice of editing and preparations for the 1st year study exercise.

Mode of study:

Lecture, moderated discussions, discussions, media recording sample analyses, text analyses, essays, contact instruction in comparing studies, screenings.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

Preparedness to devote the maximum of one's time and energy to the successful mastery of challenging tasks arising from exercise implementation and, as well, the ability to focus on the workship program.

Course contents:

The task of the course is to introduce student to the fundamentals of film editing and guide them to the execution of their exercise. The basic topics are creating time-space relationships in a cinematic work, implementing elementary editing situations (axis, parallel, cross editing, etc.) and reproduction of style creating compositional processes of the silent era.

Instruction plan:

- On-going consultations of divided exercises /Elementary, Original/. Subject matter, storyboard, rough cut, sound composition.

- Consultations on collaborations with other departments.

- At least 3 group workshops with the Directing Department where discussions take place aobut the completed exercises.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Requirements for the Summary exam /usually at the beginning of Sept./:

- Completion and revision of the Elementary exercises with the sound composition on 16mm two-band.

- Original film; consulted and developed version

- Edit - collaboration with other Departments: ex: The Directing Department Small or Large Etude, the Documentary Dept. 1st year documentary film, etc.

For the summary exam two films are submitted - in principle a collaboratin and an original film.

Part of the presentation is a written explication of both films in the extent of approx. 1 A4 standard page.
