Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Students will gain confidence in developing an awareness of the needs of screenwriting; be able to articulate the concepts, demands and professional discourse relevant to writers with projects in development in relation to directors and producers.

Course contents:

This Course, run over two consecutive days, provides an introductory outline to screenwriting needs and considerations from project and story concept through to the page, and where necessary beyond to production and filming.

Topics covered include basic writing philosophy and approaches, choosing material, the needs of structure and content, character and dialogue, choice of settings and environments, plot and mini-plot, and openings and endings. The use of music and other arts as a creative tool within the screenwriting process is also considered.

Assessment methods and criteria:

Assessment will be through in-class contribution to discussion, debate and feedback; engagement with in-class exercises and successful delivery of a 1 x 4 page film project treatment due on December 7th.
