Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Students gain familiarity with a variety of techniques useful for working with actors. Students understand acting as an art form having many valid approaches, sharing fundamental principles.

Mode of study:

In-class exercises, lecture, occasionally examples of acting styles are screened.

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

The class is limited to 22 students. It is necessary to come to the information session for the class at the start of the semester, in order to insure your place in the class.

Course contents:

A survey of important approaches to acting. Students will look at theories and techniques from acting teachers such as Stanislavski, Meyerhold, Lecoq, Brecht, Grotowski, Brook, the Method Teachers and Improvisation Gurus.

Twentieth Century Actor Training, Ed. Allison Hodge (Routledge, NY 2000)

Acting (RE) Considered, Ed. Phillip Zarrilli (Routledge, 2002)

More than a Method. Eds. Baron, Carson, and Tomasulo (Wayne State University, 2004)

Assessment methods and criteria:

Two tests (33 % ), written response to readings (33%), participation in class exercises (33%). Students must attend 70 % of classes to receive credit.
