Subject guarantor:
Miloš VOJTĚCHOVSKÝ
Name of lecturer(s):
Miloš VOJTĚCHOVSKÝ
Learning outcomes of the course unit:

Students are acquainted in the workshop with the equipment for surround sound and their connection in working with a moving digital image and additional manners of use of equipment in performance and new media art in general.

Mode of study:

Lecture and artistic workshop

Prerequisites and co-requisites:

One's own PC with Max/MSP or PureData installed

Course contents:

In this workshop we will explore Live 3D sound and live video manipulation in the Max Programming and PureData Environments. Participants will leave equipped with a collection of example programs and techniques for creating their own Interactive Audio and Video Experiences or VJ Performance Software. No previous programming experience is necessary to participate and is directed towards Computer Video or Sound Artists interested in adding a Live (2d or 3D) Visual component to their work.

In this 2 day workshop we will look at several approaches to creating our own audio specialization software for installation and live performance. We will primarily use the Max programming environment and Pure Data to design custom sound processing algorithms with a focus on creative ways of multi-channel audio distribution. We will also look to the Unity Game Engine to explore alternative ways of distributing sound in a live game environment.

The workshop is framed in relation to Martha Mooke´s quadrophonic sound performance at IIM on April 29th which is part of the vs. Interpretation Festival. Musicians, Composers, Sound Designers and Installation artists curious about adding a 3 dimensional sound or video layer to their work are encouraged to join.

Participants are invited to bring their own laptops with Max (www.cycling74.com), Pure Data, and Unity3d (www.unity3d.com) installed to follow along and ask questions.

DAY 1: starts at 10 AM

Basic Sound Panning Tools With Max MSP (panning curves, 2 channel or 4 channel setups)

OpenGL Programming to Draw shapes and attach sound sources to them (panning in 3Dimensions)

Making a custom program that does live processing on an instrument or using preloaded sounds with an Interactive Element (webcam, game controller, midi controller, mouse or keyboard)

Day 2 starts at 10 AM

Granular and Spectral approaches to Audio Specialization (separating audio into its harmonic components and specializing them individually)

Introduction to Audio Sources in the Unity Game Engine and configuring a 3D sound setup in a game environment.

Day 3: Audiovisual Performance of Martha Mooke - world premiere 3pm

Realized in collaboration with Harvestworks New York and supported by Agosto Foundation

Lecturers: Composer and electroacoustic violist Martha Mooke is a pioneer in the field of electric five-string viola, transcending musical boundaries by synthesizing her classical music training with extended techniques, digital effects processing, and improvisation. A Yamaha, Eventide, and Thomastik-Infeld Artist, she is a leading clinician on electric and progressive approaches to string playing. Mooke has toured with Barbra Streisand, Peter Gabriel, Damon Albarn, Marco Antonio Solis, Andrea Bocelli and Star Wars in Concert and has performed with Sir Elton John, Bon Jovi, Moby, Enya, Tony Bennett, John Cale, the Orchestra of St. Luke's, and others. She has appeared on The Tonight Show, Regis Live, The David Letterman Show, The View, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and The Rosie O'Donnell Show. Mooke is founding violist and Artistic Director of the Scorchio Quartet, which has performed with David Bowie (and played on Bowie's Heathen CD), Philip Glass, Patti Smith, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Michael Stipe, Regina Spektor, Moby, Trey Anastasio, and Ziggy Marley. ASCAP, Meet the Composer and Arts International are among the many institutions to have awarded Mooke for her work. Her solo debut Enharmonic Vision and CD Café Mars (as one-half of the duo Bowing with Randolph A. Hudson III) have attracted wide critical acclaim. Her new solo CD, No Ordinary Window, is produced by multi Grammy-winning producer Cynthia Daniels.

Thomas Martinez is a New York City based artist and interaction designer from Los Angeles, CA. His work in multichannel sound, improvised guitar, video and custom software form a body that embraces the rising singularity between computer algorithms and acoustic (or real) material. He has performed and exhibited work at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Shanghai Biennal 2012, Harvestworks, and Microscope Gallery. He is currently a Software and Art Resident at Pioneer Works in Brooklyn, NY.
