Note:

An audio-visual concert of Cinema Soloriens will have its premiere in Czech Republic exclusively at Školská 28 gallery in Prague.

Cinema Soloriens is a multi-media performance platform, consisting of James Harrar's experimental and highly personal film and video images with a live musical rendering of soundtracks for each film. The musical concepts are created, directed and performed by Harrar and in Prague, Dutch drumming powerhouse, Rogier Smal.

Cinema Soloriens draws attention to exploring the moving image with live performance, with evocative music, and when combined attempt to reveal deeper levels of interpretation within Harrar's visceral film poems.

Cinema Soloriens DYAD is:

James Harrar-images, tenor sax, Steiner/Crumar EVI (electric valve instrument), ethnic reeds, bulbul tarang, voice & effects.

Rogier Smal-drums, percussion and electronics.

Together, Harrar & Smal explore the moving image with live performance and when combined, is an attempt to reveal deeper levels of interpretation within Harrar's highly personal filmic works.

James Harrar is also known for his 22+ years in collaboration with Marshall Allen of the Sun Ra Arkestra. Harrar sees Cinema Soloriens as a constantly evolving creative and spiritual learning center.

Over the years, Cinema Soloriens has involved many talented musicians with the core of Harrar and Marshall Allen: Eric Thielemans, Giovanni Barcella, Chris Cutler & Geoff Leigh (Henry Cow, Artaud Beats), Daevid Allen (Gong, Soft Machine), Graham Massey (808 State), Art Jenkins & Yahya Abdul-Majid (Sun Ra Arkestra), Michael Gibbons (Bardo Pond), to name a few.

Cinema Soloriens has received praise from around the world for their „provocative, exciting collaboration“ (Japan Times); „rigorous self-expression and indifference to audience approval“ (Dyverse Music); and „bright, distorted sound [which] is a relentless torrent of tiny flint chips as the group hold down a constant barrage of squalling noise“ (Venue [UK]).

Any incarnation of Cinema Soloriens reveals a group of Artists possessing a penchant for psychedelic rock, free outre ethnological improvisations and Marshall Allen approved jazzy stomps of which these performances deliver in equal measure.

James Harrar has been crafting densely lyrical film-poems since the late 1980s exhibiting at prestigious venues all over the world, such as the Museum of Modern Art-New York, Anthology Film Archives, The Andy Warhol Museum and Yamaguchi Center for Art & Media. His films are personal in a very direct and explicit sense. In an intimate form, Harrar attempts to imprint thoughts, dreams and conceptual ideas onto the open-minded viewer while examining the possibilities of perception.

Lecture and performance Cinema Soloriens are organized in collaboration with the Centre for Audiovisual Studies, FAMU and Galerie Skolska 28.
